Kratom is believed to act on opioid receptors. At low doses, users report a stimulant effect with increased energy. At higher doses, users report reduced pain and mild euphoria.

Kratom takes effect after five to 10 minutes and its effects last two to five hours.

Kratom leaves contain two psychoactive ingredients - mitragynine and 7-hydroxymytragynine.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Kratom has a number of reported side effects, including: weight loss, dry mouth, chills, nausea, vomiting, changes in urine and constipation, liver damage, muscle pain, dizziness, drowsiness, hallucinations, depression, delusion, respiratory suppression, seizure, coma and death.
